Okay...heres the short version.
The Jump Fest is a huge convention of Shonen Jump glory held in Makuhari Convention Hall in Japan. Basicly, you go there and you'll find about every single manga in the Shonen Jump world. Theres cosplay partys, previews of Shonen Jump anime, graphic novels (manga), and live plays.:D
Thanks Kyle81

Mine too.......but I don't think that our parents would let us fly to Japan by ourselves. It would suck to have parental supervision while we're at the Fump Fest.

Nah, usually any event or anything in Japan is in Japanese...It's actually a really fun language to learn, however!

It just takes use. Right now I'm studying for the JLPT 2 test, and I need to learn a lot more Kanji, I want to be familiar with another 700 or so, so I doubt I'll be taking this year's test. I've found reading as much of whatever you pick up is useful since you'll at least recognize things you should know. Don't go for anything too hard though.
I'm a slow Kanji learner like you, just remember "Gambatte kudasai!"

So how many do you know so far vermillion?
VermilionOne

Roughly in the 400ish range. Nothing Fancy, basic colors, directions, numbers, etc... I have an extraordinarily hard time reading fantasy and sci-fi type books, but I can get by with most of the stuff placed in regular modern day with minimal use of a dictionary.
Actually, It's supposed to be too low for JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) 3, but I "technically" have conversational skills for Level 2. Realistically, I can listen and read (if I have a Kanji Dictionary handy) okay, but I'm fairly shy about speaking.
I swear, once I do get to level 2, which is supposed to be the level at which one can work in Japan, I'm going to fax the certificate to Bandai and demand I get to look over their translations and make sure these name problems stop happening ;)
honestly, though, I haven't really practiced for almost a year and a half, save for miscellaneous Katakana translations for various Gundam boards. I'm rusty, waay rusty.

Yes, you can. It really doesn't matter what age you are you should still be able to go to a community college to learn another language on breaks and over the summer. The cool thing about it is you can also fufill your second language requirement for High School at the same time, well if that's required where you live. I plan on taking some Japanese this Summer with a friend of mine. ;)

So what order do you learn your Kanji in? Do you follow a certain book? I've been following Tuttle's Kanji and Kana book, do you use/make flashcards?

Hey man, I'm in the exact same position. My high school, being in the relative boondocks, only offers the three basic European languages (Spanish, which I take, French, and German) and Latin. If I could take Japanese in high school, you have no idea how fast I would sign up for that class! ^^
But anyway, I've been teaching myself Japanese using online lessons and PC games that are supposed to teach me, and also by trying to read whatever Japanese I come across. For me, pronouncing Japanese isn't really a problem, but if your accent needs work, start listening to as much Japanese as you can and try pronouncing it yourself, too, since it's easier at younger ages to learn a new language and how to speak it. By default, I think Japanese is easy for me because of my great interests in video games, anime, and manga.
Actually, I should say I was teaching myself Japanese, as that kind of slipped away from me shortly after this school year started, but at least I pretty much have all the kana and some kanji down, as well as some words, phrases, and sentences, even if I can't read or write them, unless they're in Roumaji, of course. :P

The Kanji Lessons I've taken are arranged into blocks, Initially, a lot of the basics that will be compounded to make other Kanji, then compounds and whatnot arranged around a theme. There are about 15 Kanji per chapter in the book I'm using, and I've covered about 30 chapters (I don't remember if I stopped at 29 or 30) so roughly 450, but I'd bet on somewhere much closer to 400 when you factor in variations in the number of Kanji (as little as 10) per chapter.
If I could find my book right now, I'd tell you :p but I do use Kanji Flash cards as well.

i too am taking japanese and learning it. im in college and at the 4th class level (japanese 104). i kno about 500 kanji lost track so could be more. as vermillion said it is hard to learn cause of multiple readings and combinations. one wonders how a comboninations end up being what it is and how they came about with it. Vermillion have u taken the kanji appitude test. the ones that have 12 levels. im level 7 myself
