In the japenese version Naruto says someithing repedietly and it is translated to something similair in english but does not make sense so they just made it "Believe it".

In Japanese, Naruto uses a different dialect, the result is him constantly saying "~tte bayo!" basically to make him sound rougher and to add emphasis to eveything he says. They translate it to "believe it" because that's really the closest thing that equates to the modifier he adds to everything.

So, in fact, he does say something along the lines of "believe it" and your sources are wrong.

but his mouth flaps several times when he says it, part of translating is matching syllables to mouth flaps, which is probably why he doesn't say it more often.

that is to say, there are times where the line they write just isn't enough syllables, so they add the "believe it" translation. Also,people probably only think "dattebayo!" and it's permutation are cool because they aren't native speakers. I'm sure someone in some non-english speaking country would think "believe it!" is the greatest thing since sliced bread, if all the engrish that's all over Asia is any indicator.

I don't really like 'Believe it!' It makes him sound serious enough, I mean I have a lot of problems with Naruto's English voice actress as it is, not making him sound the same all the time. When he was crying an wailing about Zabuza on the bridge he sounded exactly the same as when he was fighting Zabuza or when he's joking around. This 'believe it' catch phrase just tkaes that and amplifies it ten fold, pretty much making a mockery of anything important he has to say because he'll say 'believe it' when he's trying to be serious, and when he's goofing off. It just doesn't fit the character....GIVE US SOME DIVERSITY!

But that's the point, he doesn't really have diversity. People are criticizing the phrase, but completely ignore that he uses permutations of "dattebayo!" even more often in Japanese. The only difference is that they don't hear it.

That's the nature of the language, though. Since it's actually a modifier, it flows more smoothly. English doesn't have modifiers in quite the same way Japanese does, so to get the same idea across alternate routes must be taken.

Also, it's the nature of the beast. The translators have to create and hold up speech patterns while getting the meaning across. It's not so hard when you're doing something in print, but the animattion also requires matching the number of "mouth flaps" which is where I bet the real problem stems.

That's the thing about translators. They're translators, not writers. Although there have definitely been some good ones, many are sort of 'meh' in the way they work the dialogue. Depending on a company's reliance on the translator, some give the translation to script writers, at least in the comc book world, then it could end up bad.

That's what I'm saying. There are definitely a few who can do that sort of double duty, but not many.

The problem with that stems from the fact that the anime and manga industry don't pay for squat. The best translators are busy doing stuff for business and government. The rest get cruddy jobs at anime and manga companies.

For the most part the translators are hired to only do that--translate. They create a fairly literal, direct translation of the dialog used.

There are a lot of anime purists who would insist that it stop right there, but it's not that simple. Most of the time, a direct translation is going to be stilted and flat--it's a translation of something written in a different language. The laws of syntax are different; the mannerisms of the language are different; something that may sound gorgeous in Japanese might, when rendered literally into English, may be bland or even unpleasant to English ears.

That's where the script writers come in.

Their job is to take the sometimes dull literal translation and make it come alive. Give it the personality of the characters, and make it work to the ears of a completely different audience than the one it was written for.

So yeah, sometimes compromises are made. The important thing is not that Naruto uses a silly phrase that is an exact translation of the silly phrase he used in Japan--it's that he's given a silly phrase to say that makes sense to an English speaking viewer.

Usually, for me, it's the attack names that make my ears bleed...when I first read some of Viz's translations, and what some of the attacks were potentially going to be named, I vowed not to watch the dubbed version.

There's just something about replacing Shishi Rendan with "Barrage of Lions" that makes me think of the old lady that hucks cats at people on the Simpsons.

I think the English translation is pretty solid.

Yea we`ve all been over the "dattebayo" thing already.

No one touched no Konohamaru`s "kore" (Prounounced Ko-rei) that he consistantly says in japanese.

Its very difficult to translate japanese speech patterns into english. There is extreme politeness (like Rock Lee uses often) and subtle mishmash of japanese that usually never gets translated over. I appreciate that they at least tried in the english version with naruto... Belive it!

While on the subject, if any of you watch Bleach, Rukia`s speech patterns when she is at Ichigo`s school, is so over the top polite (and a little outdated), that non-japanese speakers never even know the joke, beacuse the subbers cant really translate that.
