Lee could have beaten Gaara. He just became impatient and opend the 5 gates. If Lee didn't open the 5 gates and kept attacking, he would have won because the THin layer of sand gaara wears (forgot name) takes alot of Chakra to put back together, so once Garra ran out of Chakra, he would be taking some serious damage.

I also don't see how Neji could win since he is the best at close range, the sand would protect Gaara.

The only reason Neji is better is because he has Kaiten which would stop all of Lee's attacks.

The Fact is Neji and Rock Lee are taijutsu fighter. Neji at fist glance have advantage over Rock Lee because of Byakugan. I would say that in a fair pure fight both would be equal. Where rock lee would beat neji is by opening the taijutsu gate. Actually he can open 5/8 gate. He would beat hte crap out of neji but it might cost him the battle resulting in a tie.

Neji's jutsu is 64 strikes.

Neji's also able to utilize Ninjutsu, which is an advantage over Lee. Lee uses chakra internally, and the only thing that has been shown to work against the Kaiten is an external chakra force to clash with it. Neji has no problem with speed, as he can perform Roku Juu Yon Shou quickly. He can activate chakra from anywhere on his body to block an attack, too.

I'd still say Neji.

the gates are chakra points, if neji destroied these gates they cant open.

seeing rock lee use the gates on gaara could have been the worst thing to do. neji, being the genius that he is, probably located the gates exact location and will attack them if needed.

this is why rock lee will lose. unless he attacked neji in his sleep.

the gates arent enough to take down neji anymore, yes there was a time when it was possible but that time doesnt exsits anymore. lee made the mistake of using high level gates with neji watching.
