View Full Version : Reasons why this CCG might sink or swim

I'm read the rules and i really want to buy a starter deck, and very few booster packs. this game looks like fun for the casual player like myself. unfortunately, i think there will be three things that bandai really has to look out for:
Dragon ball GT: the game looks balanced so far, and i hope it stays that way. don't let ss4 goku have 25/23 whiled injured. this is how score killed old z: the switch to gt
Price: I would say that 8-9 dollars on a starter deck is reasonable, but 4 bucks for a booster? crazy:eek:
Fanbase: don't let that dbz feeling of epic battles leave like it did in score after gt. Keep everything balanced, and don't let the players feel cheated. Let it be fun!
Your thoughts? anything that you think bandai should watch out for?

The only thing Bandai had to watch out for was balanced system and not making broken cards. I think its a very good system, a upgrade from naruto's. This is a small set, so if a card pops out as good, it might be seen as "broken", but once the next set comes out, it should be bigger and pan out the rest of the elements. A true meta with big tournaments will not really start till 2nd or 3rd set.
I think this game does a good job at DB. Yes DB is about big battles, and that's what it does. But most of the times they are not alone, there are always people on the sidelines, that's what the back warriors are for.
Price changes from place to place. I am getting a case, so price is not a problem for me.

i think it will do very well and i belive when gt rolls around they will make guys like goku ss4 balanced like he can be a 9/5 but on turn 8 or 9 something like that so far i dont have any dbouth that this will be a good game i think bandai from what they have shown has done good and game mechs and prices i think may be a little high on booster but hey i love it when pack are cheap so i can buy more:p but in all honesty the prices are fine as is but thats just my opion

I agree, I really hope they balance this game. Score has been known for making overpowered cards in later sets of their ccgs. I believe there are plenty of ways to keep this balanced. In regards to an overpowered Goku ssj4, I'm sure we will not see that card for a long time. When we do, there will be more than enough cards to deal with it.

Bandai is making the game not Score.

When score first came out with the new GT cards they all looked overpowered and broken, but anyone who gave it a chance and tried out the game with the new cards found the game was still balanced. They had bigger attacks, but also had better defense. The new rules also brought more strategy into the game, instead of just relying on luck like in oldz.
Compared to some of the broken / overpowered cards and decks in oldz I think GT was a lot more balanced (with the exception of the focused GT format).
Bandai's game is very different to score's game, and I think if they did try and make cards more powerful it wouldn't work very good. When everything is based around what has the strongest attack, it means that all the cards from early DB/DBZ will be too weak and not be playable anymore.
I think the biggest problem bandai will have is getting new customers. Almost everyone on this site is a naruto player. DBZ is over and the movie is going to be bad so that can't be expected to bring in new fans.

The only problem is that Naruto is all about early game. I want DBZ to not be based on whats played T0 and T1 but the whole game. That'd be great if games and cards went up to T10.

Yea, except the people who spent years collecting dbz cards and then have to rebuy cards for gt because even though dbz was compatible with gt, the only personality that came close to the powers of gt was kid buu, and in order to be competent aganst gt decks, one needed to rebuy all new cards. Very few good things came out of gt, the new high techs is all i can think of. Score did a major "screw you" to it's player base, and even more so with re-z.

None of them are ever used =\ Putting Turn requirements on tech's is a good idea to make games last longer, I think a SS4 Gogeta T10 that is played would make the game good. I hate focusing on T0 and T1 because the game is ruined that way. Games should last and be challenging.

i dont know about not having good t 0/1 cards, how would u start the game without them:) but seriosuly, i thinnk the implimentation of a turn base is good to keep the game balanced.

Yeah but see the decks only have 30 cards in them, FORCING you to have to buy at least ONE pack! That's about 12-13 dollars, your standard deck price...

If you plan on playing in tournaments, the game is going to "force" you to buy more then just one pack.

this game will only sink or swim depending on the players. Also long as we play it should swim, but if we let it sink it will.

1 thing that i noticed dat bandai did dat was a good thing was making weak cards good effects when stronger versions of the card came out for example naruto ola gaara tn so when your opponent drops gaara tn you say ok i dont dont gotta worry bout ip. Im hoping that dey do dat with dis game b4 ss2 gohan or ss vegeta come out they make a weaker version with a good effect

Bandai isn't realeasing cards in the order they appeared in the show. That is what killed Score's game because by the time buu came out it was so much more powerful then every other card. Bandai is realesing what they want when they want to. Think about it if this was the first set in order of the show it would either be all dragonball or the sayian saga like Score did. The reason why this would sink is that not enough people play.

The price of booster packs for any card game has gone up since then. $4.00 is standard for most card games right now.

$4.00 is a typical price for many card games now. Yu-Gi-Oh is like that as well.
Score didn't really mess up when it came to DBZ/GT. They made the game as balanced as they possibly could and around the show. Unfortunately, they had a slight hiccup when it came to not allowing cards to be compatible with the new Z they tried. They lost a lot of players wo felt hey had been shafted and cheated.
As for what Bandai should watch out for, all they need to do is allow their cards to be "balanced", as people said, but in a way that the game doesn't become "cookie-cutter" and everyone has to use the same decktypes to survive. I remember times when only DB decks would work, and then a anger deck was hot. Erratas ran rampant and there were times when players were just so furstrated because they couldn't build a deck that would work, they had to build a deck that would win. Meaning, not fall to the way the metagame was focused on one decktype.
So, I guess what they really need to do is not watch so much for cards that are "balanced" as to watch out for the meta being that way. We don't need another 20+page errata list.

but that's going to happen right now, alien is by far the best, and unique is far better than anything like earth and to a lesser extent, villian. Eart types will probably not get play, cause what great warrior do they have? Unless they make andriods earth ( how would that work?) earth decks are doomed.

It is only the first set give Bandai some time to even it out. You couldn't expect to have all the decks be even right off the bat but that is what the starter decks are there for. They provide people with a start to the game even if you are experienced at card games it is a new start for everyone next set human and villian will be stronger and they will even out decks some more.

Well one bad thing is that the only two comic book stores that have cards in my area arn't getting any of bandai's dragonball ccg cards on friday:eek: Can i still get a starter deck and booster packs at say target or walmart? this is bad, bandai has to reach out and promot this ccg, otherwise it wont do well. How does magic do it? how does yu ga o do it? Bandai has to find out cause i think that the epic battles of dragon ball z will be fun in this ccg, but if other people don' think so, then all the local tournaments will stop and stores wont carry cards and it will be score all over again. Sorry if i sound like doomsday, but i really want this ccg to go for a long time before i spend $20 plus on.....paper.

Bandai has a network of Meijin who are supposed to be supporting the game, and the players as well. If you wanted your card shop to get them in this week, you should have told them about it, or even signed up to be a Meijin and host the tournies. Stores won't buy product unless they know it will sell.
I recommend you find out if you have a Meijin in your area who is going to be running tournaments. If not, you should do it yourself, or if you are under 18, you should see if one of the store owners can sign up to be one and host the tournies.

I would think that they will, but it won't be until about a week or 2 until they do. But since its a new game, Target and walmart may not order any until about a month or so after the release.

If you can get the cards from a local hobby retailer, that is the best bet.
If no such retailer exists, forget Wal-Mart or Target. There's a lot of great online retailers that are selling Dragonball and also supporting the Dragonball community. I know of at least one that is selling Dragonball product for cheaper than any of the big chains.

Question about that $20 deal: what else is there to spend $20 on, just booster packs right? How much is a box? Do we get to pick what starter we get?
