i want to know if i should be mad at a card store. so we have a 30 dollar tournament (5 each) and i get first, a good friend gets second, our prizes are first place: deck box or binder / 3 packs
second place: what first didn't want / 1 pack
doing bad math 4 packs at this store is 12 bucks so.... WTF wheres the other 18 bucks i ask and they said thats what the prize support was worth...WHY dose prize support cost them money like the mats and deck boxes and binders? i asked if i could trade the binder for a mat....nope great i get **** i don't want instead of somthing i would like. i just needed to rant also F*** YOU TATES

Your actually supposed to pay a $5 fee to the store as entrance. The general distribution of prize is supposed to be 1.25 boosters per person.
So if there are 6 people and 30 dollars. 6 people times 1.25 boosters is 7.5 boosteres.. Let's round up to 8.. So..
1st Place: 2 boosters
2nd Place: 2 boosters
3rd Place: 1 Booster
4th Place: 1 booster
5th place: 1 booster
6th Place: 1 booster
So it doesn't sound like they ripped you off.. Infact they were doing you justice because they gave you 3 packs for first.. Which is more than you should be getting according to bandai..

Yeah they only gave packs to first and 2nd. 3 and 1. that was it. and Bandai doesn't get to decide what a store gives out or how. msot INTELLIGENT stores give out all the entrance fee as prize support. Why? Cause its basicly that many sales. they give out 5 pack for a $20 tournament and its like they sold 5 packs. and since this is pre Destructive fury. its 5 packs they probably wouldn't have sold later. Instead they decided to be greedy which the issue.

Yeah at our store for Naruto we have a $3 entry fee and for every entrant it adds a pack to the pool and top 4 gets packs. Its always X, X, 1, 1.

At our store we do not charge for anything. You get no packs cause bandai does not give them packs but you don't have to pay. Basically you get 1 promo per week for entering 2 for second and third and a mat or deck box for first and the 2 promos. the reason we do this is A) most ppl don't have the money to pay every week like that, and B) we generally buy like 3 boxes of every set a piece so packs would be worthless. I personally would find another card store and set up a tourney myself if I were you. I would never pay $5 per week on a card game just don't have that amount of moneys. I can see for like a pre-release or something.

basically Like I said all the tourneys that charge money are a scam. I bet you money if you live in a city even somewhat major, you will have either a competing store or a comic shop that would be more than happy to submit their store for tournaments for you and your friends. I personally am through harboring to these money grubbing card thieves know as card store owners. They usually over price their singles and give you nothing for them in exchange. Ok that is fine they have to make a profit, but why charge for something that is free. All I want is the mat and a promo anyways, I say screw em, bandai will give prize support for running a tourney anywhere that will accepts them. I would just go elsewhere. As a matter of fact I know somebody that got a tournament started in a books a million for yugioh and Pokemon. Books a million loves it cause they get all the parents to browse for 3 hours lol.

This is such a ridiculous generalization...the store in our area is absolutely fantastic. They let us run free tournaments, or we can run entry-fee tournaments where everyone gets a pack and the winner gets more. They work as hard as they can to accommodate every game that wants to be played there. They have 3-4 magic tournaments a week, some that are free, others that have a nominal entry fee (or a larger one if it's a Box tournament or Cash tournament), and they never charge anything as ridiculous as $25 per person only to walk away with $20 of it...that's just insane. They even save time and space for the HeroClix players, despite the fact that their game died a while ago.
As an example, here is their tournament schedule for this week (Dragonball is next week, btw.)

Yeah see we actually like supporting our card stores by buying like a box each and playing in tournaments that cost money to enter. it helps the store and ourselves, We pool our cards anyways so ti works great and we don't have to be mooches on the stores time and play area.

If you have a big problem with how much you are being charged then talk to your store owner about it. Say that you and others are unable to afford $5 a week and would like the entrance fee lowered. I'm sure your store owner will understand. They are going through a rough time the same as everyone else. So before you jump the gun and decide to stop going entirely at least try to talk it out with your store owner. That's the mature thing to do.
The person who created this topic is being very selfish. Your store is following the mandate set out by Bandai's Meijin Rulebook. They are doing nothing wrong. They are distributing packs to players in the reccomended 1.25 booster ratio and they are charging the reccomended ammount. Stores are not a place for you to play card games. Stores are giving you the priviledge to make use of their space to play card games. Hobby stores are merely your outlet to purchase product. Bandai reccomends that store owners charge $5 per entrant in order to cover the cost of renting out the playroom that players are consistently using for tournaments. Your store owner is doing nothing wrong. They are merely trying to survive in the horrible Economy. Support your store instead of complaining about it. They could charge you less but they need the extra money for renting out the room to appease their players. I'm sorry but this is the blatant truth behind why they are doing it.

We only get one pack each then the winner gets a play mat and the points so thats what we play for at our store.

At our store we each buy a pack as an entrance fee. We open them all and everyone picks one card in rotation until all the cards are gone. That way we get to choose everything that was in our original pack. We give the mats to people who don't have one yet as long as the winner is alright with it.

I was not saying to not buy boxes but if the entry fee is $5 packs are 3.99, and there are 8 to 10 ppl that enter ok now you are handing them 40 to 50 dollars. If the prize support is in total 4 packs then oh look he is pocketing close to around 30 dollars per tournament.

I am not attacking your store then. Personally my store is awesome as well, they give us what we want a free tournament and never ask us for anything ever. We buy our cards from there, or at least try to. It sounds like your store is awesome you are lucky many others are not.

I disagree cam. I have been at tournaments where the owner charges $5 per person like they are supposed to and then pockets like 40 to 50 dollars, does not charge himself a fee, plays and if he wins sells the prize support for $20, minus the packs. If I get very angry at topics like this cause I have seen store owners abuse ppl, and I have been abused simply cause I did not know that I myself could organize my own tournament. The economy being bad goes both ways, if I can no longer afford to play the new sets cause I played in tournaments every week this past 3 months then I will probably drop the game altogether. It may be bad for store owners but being cheated is worse for the consumer. My suggestion to the guy who made this topic is, if you think you are being cheated do something about it. If not then chillax.

haha. CHILLAX BRAH! I would never play money for a tournament (maby a dollar just for fun lol). It's easy to go elsewere. If I want some packs then I would go and purchase them normaly and not through a tourny... your savings are not that much even if your a first place winner. You could always try books-A-million :) My BAM Has Yu-gi-oh, Twilight Imperium, and D&D. Were are never short on players. This place has a huge carpeted area in the middle complete with 2 tables and 8 chairs not including the 4 lounge chairs and coffe table :)
I'm trying to get Dragonball started over there along with a couple other guyes.

Look. honestly people I don't think you udnerstand the problem at all. Especially you Cameron. yous eem to be way off the wall here. The issue isn't with the cost. tis with the fact that he pocketed almsot all of the money. Thats not cool. If Bandai wants to say the store SHOULD keep 5 thats there perogative. Howeve rI've judged MANY games and I've never heard of a cmpany mandating how a tournament should be run, only how "their" prize support should be handed out. The fact is if I'm entering a tournament I expect that every dollar I pay to enter be part of the prize unless there is a very valid reason why not. In this case it was just greed and that S#*! won't fly.

There is a valid reason why the whole fee shouldnt be given in prizes, there should be some fee for the fact that you are using thier space and they likely have some hand in the organiztion of it. But really the should only amount to like a dollar per fee if that.

They are getting something out of it though. They are getting sales equal to the tournament entrances. like lets say the game cost $5 to enter and say $4 a pick and 8 of us enter. That is 10 packs worth of sales that they are getting no matter what at that point. The point of a tournament is to get sales for the store and to make the players happy. not to skim money off the top

I'm not saying that its not immoral for a Store to keep more than their share. All I'm telling you guys is that this is what Bandai recommends. If the store owner is following Bandais recommendations then they are doing nothing wrong. If they aren't and you are being ripped off then that is wrong.

At my store we get a booster for each player about 15-30 promo card (depends on the number of players), 2 play mats, we open everything, put it on the table, winner of the tournament get first pick, then in order until there are no more cards (play mats deck box and so on...), like that everyone is happy, and its fair for everyone.
